No, we are a hydroponic farm.
Yet, organic farming and hydroponic farming have similarities and differences. The answer to this question that we believe most are looking for when you are asking is whether we utilize synthetics (or harmful chemicals as pesticides). The answer is: we never use synthetic pesticides, fungicides or herbicides; only OMRI approved, natural insect control as well as utilizing IPM. Learn more about hydroponics and organics on our ‘Hydroponic and Organic?‘ page.
In short, hydroponics is a non-traditional farming method that does not require soil.
Soil can be replaced with natural “media” such as coco fiber or pine bark, or can also be completely irrelevant with other hydroponic systems that utilize only water and nutrient solutions. There are actually many ways to grow hydroponically, and there are numerous advantages to it. In most systems plants are grown above the ground so insects are much more manageable, there isn’t any dirt which essentially makes your produce cleaner, and water conservation is prevalent.
Hydroponic growing is eco-friendly and a sustainable way to farm, especially in Florida where our soil is less than ideal. The Homestead currently grows with multiple hydroponic systems and are always evolving to find more efficient and practical methods of growing fresh, clean and completely synthetic-pesticide free vegetables. Visit our ‘Hydroponic and Organic?‘ page for more information.
Currently we are not open to the public. While we wish we could show everyone our farm, it’s something we look forward to planning for the future. Right now, with the small amount of family hands working on The Homestead, we must stick to growing and maintaining the farm as well as attending markets. We also sell our pesticide free butterhead lettuces to Sarasota County Schools. The county receives 1/3-1/2 of their lettuce order from us, and we are striving to complete their order in the seasons to come!
This may not be as common of a question as it should!
We truly believe in selling what we grow. We are not a re-distributor and never intend to be. The goal of The Homestead Hydroponic Farm is to always bring you the freshest produce that only we have grown.
In the past, however, we have however teamed up with other local farms in Florida near to us- in order to round out some of our selections, and help bring their farm’s produce or product to our community. If we are offering something from another farm at our booth, it will always be presented as such.
Yes! A minimum of $10 is asked to be reached.
Currently we do not have any tours or workshops scheduled at the farm. This is something we would love to explore, but the timing has to be right and we are just not there yet. Change is inevitable though, so this may not always be the case!
